What is a Domain Name?
A domain name uniquely identifies a website. Typing a domain name (also called a URL) into your browser allows you to visit that site.
One unique domain name can be used as a company's web address and for its email addresses.
Domains are much more than just names typed into a web browser. Your domain name is how the world will think of you and your business. It's part of your brand and your marketing plan. You can have multiple domains that each relate to some aspect of your business. A domain can be easy to remember and help establish you on the web.
Imagine if everybody in the world used their Social Security number or their telephone number instead of their name. If names didn't exist, you'd be forced to invent them.
Domain names were invented to fill a similar need on the Internet. Most computers connected to the Internet are identified by a unique number called an IP address.
Domain names offer a more intuitive way to name and find a website. Each domain name replaces a string of meaningless numbers (an IP address) with a simple word or expression. That's the theory, in practice, domain names can be pretty obscure too.

What is DNS?
DNS stands for Domain Name System.
The Domain Name System is like the phone book for the Internet. DNS maps the IP addresses (eg., 207.241.148.80) to human readable hostnames (eg. www.about.com). So DNS determines which physical server handles a domain's website traffic or email delivery.
Instead of one central directory, DNS is a distributed network of name servers. Each domain maintains their own authoritative name server instead of relying on one central directory. DNS services are included in every hosting plan so you don't have to worry about getting your own name server.
